Frequently Asked Questions

Getting Started with Iyengar Yoga

What is Iyengar Yoga?

Iyengar Yoga is a precise, alignment-focused practice developed by B.K.S. Iyengar. It emphasizes correct body alignment, timing, and sequencing. What sets it apart is the intelligent use of props like blocks, belts, blankets, and chairs to help you access poses safely and deeply, regardless of your flexibility or experience level.

Is Iyengar Yoga right for me?

Yes. Our studio is designed for everyone, from complete beginners to experienced practitioners. We have a fully propped environment specifically created to help individuals with physical ailments participate in yoga. Whether you're recovering from an injury, managing a chronic condition, or simply want to deepen your practice, Iyengar Yoga meets you where you are.

I've never done Iyengar Yoga before. Where do I start?

Start with an Intro class. This is non-negotiable if you're new to Iyengar Yoga. Intro classes teach you the foundational actions, how to use props correctly, and the core principles of alignment. This foundation is essential before moving to other levels. Check out our full class offerings on our class types page.

What are the different class levels?

We offer six class levels, each building on the previous one:

Intro/Level 1 - Foundation and basic actions. Perfect for beginners or anyone new to Iyengar Yoga.

Level 1-2 - Transition class that bridges foundational work with intermediate poses.

Level 2 - Focuses on connections and relationships between poses. You'll explore how poses relate to each other and build strength and flexibility.

Level 2-3 - Advanced intermediate work with more complex sequencing and deeper exploration.

Gentle - Slower-paced, therapeutic classes ideal for those with injuries, limited mobility, or anyone seeking a calming practice.

Restorative - Deeply relaxing classes using props to support your body in passive poses. Perfect for stress relief and recovery.

For detailed information about each class type, visit our class types page. Class schedule page.

What props will I use and why?

Props are not shortcuts. They're tools that help you access the full benefits of yoga safely. Here's what you'll encounter:

Mats - Your foundation for standing and floor poses.

Blocks - Bring the floor closer to you, making poses accessible and helping with alignment.

Belts - Extend your reach and help you maintain proper alignment in stretches and binds.

Blankets - Support your spine, and help with alignment in seated and resting poses.

Chairs - You’ll learn ways to use the chair to make the poses accessible.

Bolsters - Support your body in restorative poses for deep relaxation.

Sandbags and weights - Add grounding and stability to poses.

Backbenders - Specialized equipment for safe backbend practice.

Our studio is fully equipped with all necessary props. New students are shown where everything is stored and guided on what to gather for class.

Online vs. In-Person Classes

Do you offer online classes?

Yes. We offer both in-person and online classes throughout the week. Check out this page for the full schedule.

What's the difference between online and in-person?

In-person - You have direct access to props and the teacher can physically adjust your alignment. Our studio space accommodates up to 45 participants per class. About 70% of our students prefer in-person for the hands-on guidance and community feel.

Online - Perfect if you can't make it to the studio or prefer practicing at home. You'll need basic props (mat, blocks, blanket, belt). The teacher provides verbal cues for alignment. Online classes are recorded and available to members on Vimeo, so you can practice on your own schedule.

Can I switch between online and in-person classes with my membership?

Yes. Your membership works for both formats, so mix and match based on your schedule.

Therapeutic Benefits & Modifications

Can Iyengar Yoga help with my specific condition or injury?

Approximately 80% of our students come to us with physical ailments, and about 10% have serious conditions. Iyengar Yoga's prop-based approach makes it ideal for therapeutic work. Common areas we support include back pain, shoulder issues, knee problems, arthritis, and recovery from injury.

The key is working with a certified teacher who can modify poses specifically for your needs. Always mention any injuries, conditions, or limitations when you arrive for class.

How are poses modified for different bodies and conditions?

Our teachers are trained to observe students and provide real-time modifications. Props are the primary tool for adaptation. For example:

  • If you have tight hamstrings, a block under your hand in a forward fold brings the floor closer.

  • If you have knee issues, props support proper alignment and reduce strain.

  • If you have shoulder limitations, belts and blocks help you access poses safely.

  • If you're recovering from surgery, gentle classes and restorative poses support your healing.

Never push into pain. The practice is about awareness and honoring your body's needs.

What should I tell the teacher about my condition?

Tell them everything. Mention injuries, surgeries, chronic pain, mobility limitations, or any health concerns. This helps the teacher sequence and modify appropriately for you. Our studio is built on the principle that yoga should be accessible to everyone, regardless of physical challenges.

Class Logistics

What should I bring to class?

For in-person classes, bring a water bottle. Everything else is provided. Our teachers will show you where props are stored and guide you on what to gather.

For online classes, you'll need a mat, two blocks, a belt, a chair and 3 blankets.

What time should I arrive?

Arrive 10-15 minutes early, especially for your first class. This gives you time to settle in, gather props, and get oriented.

Can I eat before class?

Avoid heavy meals 2-3 hours before class. Light snacks are fine, but give yourself time to digest.

What should I wear?

Wear comfortable, breathable clothing that allows freedom of movement. Avoid overly baggy clothes that make it hard for the teacher to see your alignment.

How many people are typically in a class?

Our average class size is 12 students, though classes can range from 12 to 45 depending on the time and level.
